The rivers of Europe have served as boundaries, avenues of transportation and sources of sustenance. Many European rivers have been celebrated in song and prose and have a played a major role in both commerce and history. In early civilization they provided a means of food and trade. During conflicts they were used as boundaries as well as invasion and conquer. During the renaissance they carried trade and knowledge.
